The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio is here.
Nearly 5,000 medals will be made and each one is an example of Rio 2016’s commitment to sustainability.
This year each medal will include metal derived from recycled electronic equipment.
This is done for sustainability purposes but for cost reasons as well. If a medal were to be made of solid gold it would be cost prohibitive at approximately $23,500 each. To make a gold medal, a silver medal is plated with a small amount of Brazilian gold. Check out the full article.
